Eye Agate is a rare type or category of agate. The eye formation is a special case of the banded agate group. These agates form eyes with bands in perfect concentric circles. Three dimensionally the eye exists as a perfect semi-sphere in the host banded agate. The depth of the eye formation in the host agate is never more than the radius of the eye itself.

 Eyes occur in varying degrees near the outside surface of any nodular banded agate. They are most common in the Lake Superior Agates from Minnesota and the Botswana Agates from Africa. In both of these agate types the eye formation occurs in about 5% of the nodules. Sometimes the name "eye agate" is used to refer to circular banding resulting from tube or botryoidal formations. This has caused some confusion in the use of the designation "eye agate". All the agates shown below are genuine Eye Agates and refer to the formation described above.
